Peter Mars Art | Iconic Modern Pop

Portland, Oregon may not be perceived as a hotbed of iconic pop art or a suitable place for a revered leader of the Chicago Pop movement for the last two decades but this is precisely where Peter Mars was born in 1959. Even in his youth, Mars found beauty in the most mundane objects. From baseball cards to matchbooks, Mars collected little trinkets of American culture to call his own and later used the inspiration garnered from these apparently innocuous items as a means of creating works of art.

Like author Philip Roth who transformed tales of normal American life into commentaries on the way we behave unconsciously towards one another, Mars uses American family life as well as iconic images like Coca-Cola and moulds them in his own image. Some of Mars’ work includes combining images of famous individuals’ faces with popular advertising to produce a cavalcade of color and emulate Roth by commenting on American society and the family.

Yet he is not content to isolate the most popular images in pop culture and poke fun at the way commercialism invades people’s lives, forcing them to conform to the perceived norm of society in a delicious display of irony. Mars also fuses this with outsider art which is in many ways the antithesis of pop art. Outsider art focuses on everything outside the mainstream. Mars attempts to show things which are considered ‘low’ or ‘vulgar’ can not just be aesthetically pleasing but beautiful.

Mars’ medium is the silkscreen where he rolls ink over a woven mesh of silk. Rather than merely paint a picture, Mars likes to use the elegance of silk to create a story to tell the reader, for art is just another means of telling a tale. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Mars’ work is not easily pigeonholed nor is it immediately obvious. The complexity of his work means that a cursory glance fails to do it justice. Just like Mars pays great attention to detail in his creation, those fortunate enough to read his story must concentrate in order to decipher his meaning.

If you are willing to take your senses on a journey and view Peter Mars’ art, take a trip to the Off The Wall Modern Art Gallery in Houston, Texas. His thought-provoking masterpieces are currently on display along with work from other respected artists and legends like Salvador Dali. Oscar Wilde once said that an artist created simply because they found joy in their creation. If that is the case, then Peter Mars is the epitome of the word ‘artist’.

One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. …
